Cornish, Staten Island « Thread Started on Feb 22, 2008, 10:59am »
I am trying to start a family tree for my wife. Her maiden name being Cornish. I know her family is from Staten Island. I believe her great grandparents were Henrietta Duggane Cornish and Benjamin Cornish. I believe another menber was Abram Loami Cornish. Supposedly they are related to the Shotwell family also. Any ideas or existing trees I could view or other avenues? I am new to this research.

Church records are probably the way to go. Plan a trip to go there,or write them and ask them how far their records go back. There is probably a small fee or a donation that you will probably have to make to do an inquiry but I am sure it would be worth it to you if you find the information you are looking for. Cemetary records are also a good source of information, the office of the cemetary is required by law to keep a record of everyone who is buried there. You will also be able to locate the graves and possibly read the names and dates on the tombstones ,giving you even more information. I found information in a cemetary that went back to the 19th century in the USA . Good luck in your search. Try some of the websites where some searches are free also. Some churches have free websites also for records..

Hi, my maiden name is also Cornish. My grandmother was Henrietta Duganne who was married to Melvin Abraham Cornish. Their son Abram Loami married Grace Shotwell. My father was Melvin C. Cornish. Henrietta and Melvin had 7 children(Eva, Abram, William, Melvin, Ellen Ida, Arthur, and Theodore). They lived in Brooklyn. My dad grew up near the Navy Yard at 159 Heyward St. He enlisted in the Navy in World War I. I don't have a lot of information on Henrietta except that her father was Charles Duganne and he was a ship caulker. I will be glad to share what I have with you.
